A dangerous journey together

We're just about one week from the start of our study of the greatest book besides the Bible. I look forward to taking the journey again, this time with my friends from church. Don't forget to pick up a copy of The Pilgrim's Progress if you don't already have one.

The greatest book besides the Bible? Cool, I love Lord of the Rings! ;)

Tolkien is great. I wonder how much influence he owes to the original English novelist: Bunyan? Do you know if Tolkien ever referred to TPP?

A quick search in the collected letters of Tolkien yields a no...and he was definitely on record as loathing allegory, even letting this affect his opinion on the Chronicles of Narnia. So I'm guessing he would have denied any influence!

Cody - thanks for the checking. I knew that Tolkien didn't care for Lewis' Chronicles, but I didn't realize his feelings expanded to all allegories.

Yeah, Tolkien was a good guy and a wonderful writer, but he was rather persnickety when it came to his literary tastes! Of course, he was also Catholic so his views on guys like Bunyan may have been skewed regardless of how they wrote.
